How to Change Your Powersport's Oil | Dry Ridge KY | Serving Florence, Lexington & Georgetown

Changing your oil might be the most important thing you can do to maintain your vehicle's performance and reliability. And while we can perform one for you here at our service center, many powersport owners choose to do it themselves. Keep reading to find out how you can change your powersport vehicle's oil. As usual, though, you'll want to check your user manual, as each vehicle is different.

Getting Ready

Before removing your oil filter and messing up your driveway, you'll want to ensure to get a few things in order. You'll want to place a decently-sized tray under the oil drain plug, and maybe even some newspaper under that for splashes. You'll want to also wear something you don't care about, because oil stains don't let up easily.

Make sure you're parked on a flat surface and that your parking brake is on. You won't want your powersport vehicle rolling away and leaving a trail of blackened oil in its path. Don't ever do maintenance on a hot engine, either. You'll find out quickly enough that that's no way to work.

Using the Right Oil

Different vehicles and engines sometimes require different oil. Refer to your user manual before filling your oil tank up with the first bottle you grab on the shelf.

Making the Change

Once you pull the drain plug, there's no going back. Make sure you catch the oil in the tray. Once the oil has drained completely, take out the filter and clean up the area where the filter and engine meet with a clean, dry cloth. Install the new oil filter with a new O-ring that has been freshly lubricated with a little bit of clean engine oil. Verify that the O-ring is free of cracks, holes or concerning blemishes. Replace the sealing washer on the drain plug, install it back on the engine and torque it to specification. Refill the engine with fresh oil.

Double-Checking

After refilling your engine with oil, start up the vehicle and let it idle for a bit. Then stop the engine and inspect it for leaks. After at least fifteen seconds, you can check the oil dipstick to see if the level is within the "safe" range. Dispose of your oil and filter properly, and re-install any other parts you may have had to remove to get to the oil filter and drain plug.
